Day 4: Valletta (Malta's Capital), Pastizzi, Knights of Malta, & Caravaggio

Milana: For the first day of June, I went to Valletta which is the capital city of Malta. For lunch I ate one of my favorite Maltese pastries. I ate pastizzi which is like a crispy, crunchy, flaky pastry with either ricotta cheese or pizelli (which has peas). My favorite is the pizelli pastizzi. I ate this at Eddie's Cafe Regina.

Valletta is where the prime minister of Malta works. This city was established by the knights of St. Malta in the 1500s. The Knights of Malta, earlier called the Knights of St. John, were a group of people who helped the sick, poor, and injured pilgrims. Valletta was built as a fortress to protect the people of the city.

I also went to the St. John's Cathedral. The art on the walls and ceiling were marvelous. I saw incredible paintings by Caravaggio. Caravaggio was an Italian who lived in Malta for some time. He made a painting called the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. I saw the huge (12 feet by 17 feet) original painting. The painting was completed in 1608.

The last place I went to was the Upper Barakka Gardens. The Upper Barakka Gardens is also located in Valletta. It had arches, a fountain, and plenty of beautiful flowers. The Grand Harbour is right next to it.

Chloe: Today I went to Valletta with my sister and dad and mom, nannu and nanna. We had ice cream, we ate lunch there. I had penne with ricotta.
